Artist William
J Whalen started drawing at an early age.
Instead of the budding artist deciding to make a career at painting, he
went into the music arena in his teens, recording 14 albums, and achieving Gold Record status at age 22. He
traveled on the road touring with the Newfoundland Showband for many
years, leading to television appearances including a full season with CBC’s
All Around the Circle, and commercials aired during primetime Hockey
Night in
It was not until 47 years of age that he seriously began to pursue his career in painting. Studying under the direction of the late John Littlejohn for seven years, he painted the murals at Bell Island, Newfoundland--predominantly portraits of the people and landscapes of scenes from Bell Island’s rich history. Pictured above is the "Belle of the Bay".
Bill has donated the "Belle of the Bay" without personal remuneration.
